Open-Source Vision-Language Models (VLMs) in 2026: Qwen3-VL, Gemma 4, MiniCPM-V and More

A vision-language model (VLM) is an AI model that can look at images — photos, screenshots, charts, scanned documents, even video — and reason about them in natural language. Ask it "what is wrong with this part?", "extract the totals from this invoice" or "which button should I click next?" and it answers. In 2026, open VLMs became good enough, and small enough, for serious business use without sending images to a third party.

What VLMs can do

  • Visual question answering — describe, compare and reason about images.
  • Document understanding — read forms, tables and charts and answer questions about them.
  • Screen understanding — interpret app and web interfaces, the foundation of computer-use agents.
  • Video understanding — summarise footage, find moments, track objects over time.
  • Grounding — point to the exact location of an object or text in an image.

The leading open VLMs in 2026

Qwen3-VL and Qwen3.8

Alibaba's Qwen3-VL family is the most capable widely used open VLM line. It is Apache 2.0, supports a 256K context expandable to one million tokens, reads text in 32 languages, handles hours-long video and can operate PC and mobile interfaces (model card). The newer Qwen3.8-27B goes further: it is natively multimodal, understanding images and video in a single dense 27B model that fits on one GPU (model card).

Best for: general-purpose vision, documents, video and GUI agents.

Google Gemma 4

Every Gemma 4 model — from the phone-sized E2B to the 31B — accepts images, processes video as frame sequences, and the smaller sizes also take audio. It is now Apache 2.0 (model card).

Best for: on-device and edge vision, and teams wanting a permissive licence from a major vendor.

MiniCPM-V (OpenBMB)

MiniCPM-V specialises in efficient on-device vision. Version 4.7, released in October 2026, comes in a 35B mixture-of-experts model with about 3B active parameters and a 1B model; its developers report the larger one running at around 13 tokens per second in about 3 GB of memory on a recent iPhone. Code and weights are Apache 2.0 (GitHub).

Best for: mobile apps that need private, offline image understanding.

Microsoft Phi-4-reasoning-vision

A 15B MIT-licensed model built for computer-use agents and visual reasoning in maths and science, with strong reported results on screen-grounding and chart benchmarks (model card).

Best for: screen understanding and chart or diagram reasoning.

InternVL and Molmo

InternVL3.5 spans 1B to 241B parameters and remains a strong research and production option (paper). Ai2's Molmo 2, released in December 2025, is notable for pointing and tracking objects in video and for releasing its training data openly.

Others

  • Mistral Small 4 folds Mistral's former Pixtral vision model into a single Apache 2.0 model.
  • Llama 4 models are natively multimodal.
  • DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash accepts images as well as text under MIT.
  • SmolVLM2 (256M–2.2B, Apache 2.0) from Hugging Face for very constrained devices.

Business use cases

  • Quality inspection — spot defects in product photos on a production line.
  • Insurance and claims — assess damage photos and pre-fill claim forms.
  • Retail and e-commerce — auto-tag products, generate descriptions from photos, visual search.
  • Real estate — describe properties and rooms from listing photos.
  • Document processing — understand charts, forms and tables (see open-source OCR models).
  • Field service — technicians photograph equipment and get guidance.
  • Accessibility — describe images for visually impaired users.
  • Computer-use agents — read screens to automate workflows in software without APIs.

Why self-host a VLM?

Images often contain the most sensitive information a company has — identity documents, medical scans, faces, customer premises. Open VLMs let you process them without sending them to an external provider, and small models make this affordable: many run on one GPU, and some on the user's phone. How Zinetics can help

We build vision features into web and mobile apps — from photo-based product listing and damage assessment to on-device visual search — using open or commercial models depending on your privacy and accuracy needs. Explore our AI services or tell us about your use case.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vision-language model (VLM)?

A VLM is an AI model that understands both images and text. It can describe images, answer questions about them, read documents and screens, and in many cases understand video.

What is the best open-source VLM in 2026?

Strong options include Alibaba's Qwen3-VL family and the natively multimodal Qwen3.8-27B, Google's Gemma 4, OpenBMB's MiniCPM-V 4.7 for on-device use, and Microsoft's Phi-4-reasoning-vision for screens and charts.

Can vision-language models run on a phone?

Yes. Models such as Gemma 4 E2B/E4B and MiniCPM-V are designed for on-device use, and MiniCPM-V's developers report its 4.7 MoE model running in about 3 GB of memory on a recent iPhone.

Are open-source VLMs good at OCR?

General VLMs such as Qwen3-VL and Gemma 4 read documents well and can answer questions about them. For high-volume, structured extraction, specialised OCR models such as PaddleOCR-VL or GLM-OCR are usually more efficient.
